Bruges, a picturesque city in the north west of Belgium, renowned for its well preserved medieval architecture and extensive network of canals. As a consequence, it is often referred to as the “Venice of the North”.

This pretty Belgian city, is capital to the west Flanders province, and a UNESCO world Heritage site that attracts millions of visitors annually. Added to this, Bruges’s historic charm lies in its cobblestone streets, Gothic churches, and iconic landmarks such as the Belfry of Bruges, the Basilica of the Holy Blood, and the Market Square (Markt Square).

You can enjoy this romantic, fairytale city on foot and by boat. Make sure you take a scenic boat ride along its canals. The linking waterways really give you a unique perspective of Bruges’ timeless beauty.

The markets run from the end of November to early January. Bruges doesn’t have just one Christmas market either, it has two! Probably, the most famous is found in the Markt (The Market Square). The square transforms into a central hub offering traditional Christmas stalls selling gifts, decorations and food all under the glow of a giant Christmas tree

The second market is in Stevinplein (Simon Stevin Square) which focuses more on local crafts and handmade items

One thing you can be assured of is a lot of seasonal treats like Belgian waffles, fries, shrimp croquettes and mulled wine to add to the festive spirit. The markets are suited to all ages and easily explored making them perfect for a day trip or a weekend getaway.
