Swakopmund

Swakopmund is a lively town located on the west of Namibia, due west of Windhoek, the capital city. It sits snuggly between the cold winds of the Atlantic Ocean and the searing heat of the desert. It is also one of Namibia’s largest towns.

This pretty town has a very European feel to it. It was founded by Germans back in 1892 and the German colonial architecture here reflects this even today. This German influence is similar to that found further south in Luderitz but Swakopmund is far more lush and green.

Swakopmund has a much more modern feel to it than many places in Namibia. It embraces its beachfront, tropical feel with a palm-lined promenade running adjacent to its wide beaches. It also offers outdoor dining and wining, including great seafood, and quality guest houses.

As a consequence, it has become a popular tourist destination. It has also grown to become an centre of adventure sports, from skydiving to dune boarding.

Swakopmund is an interesting town to see whilst you are visiting Namibia and acts as a very useful base for further adventures. Its positioning at the bottom of the Skeleton Coast gives you easy access for trips to this wild, rugged coastline. Equally, if you’re going south to the iconic dunes of Sossusvlei, it’s a good starting point.

Most of us coming to Namibia, want more authentic Namibia but this little town offers a nice welcome break for some r & r whilst exploring this wonderful country.
