Walvis Bay
The picturesque coastal town of Walvis Bay is located 20 kms south of Swakopmund where desert landscapes meet the striking waters of the Atlantic Ocean. It is home to some fantastic marine and bird life.
Flamingo Lagoon is located to the south of Walvis Bay and is one of the best flamingo viewing places in the world. Pelicans and some 150 other species of bird have also been recorded in this area.
At certain times of year, humpback whales and bottlenose dolphins make a regular appearance in the bay.

Similar to its neighbour, Walvis Bay also offers adventure sports for those seeking thrills both on and off the water. You will not be short of tours to explore this harbour town and the stunning surrounding coastal scenery. You can take a catamaran cruise out to see the beauty of the bay or even a scenic flight over the region.
If you have time to take a boat tour, you can expect to see playful dolphins dancing in the surf. Additionally, if you’re fortunate, you will also meet the marine “Big Five” – seals, penguins, dolphins, whales, and the mighty sunfish.
Walvis Bay also prides itself on its gastronomy delights. In particular, the freshest of seafood, from succulent oysters to delectable fish dishes. There are a number of waterfront dining options for you whilst taking in the panoramic views of the bay.
Furthermore, if you travel some 40 kms further south, you’ll arrive at the historic Sandwich Harbour. Here, the dunes run into a major lagoon where the wetlands attract flamingos and other waders and shore birds.
Sandwich Harbour or Sandwich Bay, as it is also called, was once a thriving commercial fishing and trading port. Nowadays, it is a deserted wildness where 100m sand dunes plunge into the Atlantic. There are some great 4×4 tours that take you here from either Swakopmund or Walvis Bay.
