Your Ultimate Guide to the Best Wellness Retreat in Sri Lanka
The Pearl of the Indian Ocean
Sri Lanka had been calling my name for years. I was extremely excited about the promise of an exotic adventure on this compact island. I was particularly intrigued by the chance to experience a wellness retreat in Sri Lanka. The country, known as the “Pearl of the Indian Ocean,” is an island with a little bit of everything. It offers golden beaches, lush tea plantations, ancient temples, vibrant wildlife and, of course, wonderful Sri Lankan retreats.

The cultural treasures of Kandy and Anuradhapura captivate visitors. The safari plains of Yala offer thrilling wildlife encounters. The palm-fringed coastlines of Galle and Mirissa are breathtaking. The country blends heritage with natural beauty.
It’s a year-round destination. The best time to visit depends on where you’re heading. The east coast is best from May to September. The west and south coasts shine from December to April. For Kandy and the hill country, this time is when skies are clearer. The climate is pleasantly cool.

Finding my Retreat in Sri Lanka
There are many ways to travel across Sri Lanka. You can go by train or tuk-tuk. Some might even choose the back of an elephant, though I’d suggest against the latter. But when you’re about to check yourself into a detox, why not start in the most glamorous way possible? Naturally, I chose a seaplane from Colombo Airport to Kandy.

I had decided to cleanse both my body and soul. I might as well do it perched in the mountains with fresh air and understated luxury. The Santani Wellness Retreat came with great recommendations and reviews. Though, I particularly liked its location high above Kandy. It was also central to my further Sri Lankan travels. My retreat in Sri Lanka had been found!
The Seaplane: Champagne Dreams, Handbag Reality

Forget boring airport lounges. In Colombo, I stood on the edge of the Indian Ocean. I was boarding a tiny seaplane that looked like it belonged in an old Bond film. I half expected Sean Connery to pop up and offer me a martini.
Now, I’d love to tell you I boarded like a Hollywood starlet, scarf fluttering in the wind. Still, in reality, I clambered in while clutching my handbag. I was trying to figure out whatever made me think that this was a good idea. Nonetheless, once inside, I felt every bit the chic adventurer.
Take-off was an exhilarating rattle and zoom. In no time, we were soaring above paddy fields, winding rivers, and the lush green of Sri Lanka’s hill country. My hilltop retreat in Sri Lanka was fast becoming a reality. But if there was ever a reminder, it was that travel is about the journey as much as the destination. This was it.

For the record, the views alone were worth the ticket price. Who needs business class when you’ve got mountain scenery from your window seat?
First Impressions: Santani’s Mountain Magic
Arriving at my retreat in Sri Lanka, Santani Wellness Resort, was like stepping into another world. The retreat is perched high in the hills outside Kandy. It blends seamlessly into the jungle. There are minimalist chalets on stilts and sweeping open-air pavilions. The soothing silence feels like an instant spa treatment.

On arrival, I was handed a cup of herbal tea. It looked suspiciously like pond water. Still, one sip told me this was no ordinary brew. My shoulders dropped three inches just drinking it.
The suites are a marvel. They have floor-to-ceiling windows. These windows make you feel as though the mountains are part of your living room. The design is stripped-back and elegant. It’s the minimalist chic that says: “You’re here to find inner peace, not redecorate.”

This Retreat in Sri Lanka is More Than Just Wellness
It’s easy to think of Santani Wellness Retreat as only for hardcore yoga lovers. You might also think it’s just for green-juice devotees. In truth, it’s a retreat for everyone. Yes, there are detox programs, Ayurveda therapies, and meditation sessions if you want them. You can also simply soak in the mountain views. Indulge in spa treatments and enjoy exquisite cuisine. It feels more like fine dining than a “wellness diet.”
You might look for a deep reset. Perhaps you want a romantic escape. Or you simply seek a peaceful base for exploring Kandy and Sri Lanka’s hill country. The Santani wellness retreat offers the perfect blend of luxury. It also provides serenity and choice. Wellness is an option and definitely not a requirement.

You don’t need to commit to a strict detox — Santani lets you pick and choose. Dip into yoga and Ayurveda, or simply treat yourself to massages and mountain views.
A Day in Detox
Of course, I, nevertheless, wasn’t just here for the scenery. Upon my arrival, I had an appointment with the on-site doctor. We discussed my diet, objectives and overall wellness treatment. He duly structured a personal plan for me to follow during my stay and it was all systems go.

This was a detox. Imagine visions of green juices and yoga at sunrise. I nobly resisted the call of a gin and tonic. The days slipped into a rhythm of meditation. This was not my strong point. There were Ayurvedic treatments. The meals were so healthy, I felt virtuous just looking at them. By the end, I swear my skin was glowing. My mind was clearer. I almost believed that mung beans were delicious.
That said, the culinary delights were top notch. The chef took time to understand my preferences and relay which foods he felt would best suit my plan. I chose to mix my green juices with a healthy diet so that it wasn’t too hard core for me! Once again, this is an entirely individual choice.

Letting Serenity Take Over
The staff gently encourage you to “disconnect,” which is code for forget the Wi-Fi and embrace your robe. By day three, I was actually enjoying the lack of notifications and beginning to believe mung beans might be underrated.
- Morning yoga in an open-air pavilion as mist curls up from the valley. (Some of my poses were less “serene lotus” and more “confused flamingo,” but no one was judging.)
- Spa therapies rooted in Ayurveda, Sri Lanka’s traditional healing system. Imagine being cocooned in warm oils while staring at the treetops. You will receive 75-90mins daily treatments included in your programme. This was total bliss and definitely a personal highlight.
- Meals designed by nutritionists – colourful plates that make kale not only edible, but dare I say, delicious.
Exploring Beyond the Spa
If you tire of sipping herbal teas and gazing out over the mountains, Santani makes the perfect base. It is a great starting point for exploring Kandy and beyond. You can:
- Visit the Temple of the Tooth, one of Buddhism’s most sacred sites.
- Wander through tea plantations, sipping the freshest brews imaginable.
- Or simply take the complimentary guided hikes through the surrounding jungle, returning smug with your 20,000 steps before lunch.

Still, each time I ventured out, I found myself longing to return to Santani’s quiet embrace. I wanted to go back to the view, the spa, and that mysterious herbal tea.
Why Santani for your Sri Lankan Retreat?

There are wellness resorts, and then there is Santani. It’s not about flashy gimmicks or overly complicated juice cleanses. Instead, it offers something far rarer: peace, privacy, and a sense that you’re part of the landscape.
If you choose to follow a programme, you will find that there are many available. Each will be entirely customised to suit your specific needs. You can choose to have it entirely structured. Alternatively, you can have it as flexible as you wish. There are no hard and fast rules or men in white jackets here. This is a resort that endeavours to inspire and encourage rather than enforce and instill.
Here, luxury isn’t crystal chandeliers. It’s the sound of cicadas at night. The soft glow of lanterns at dusk. It’s the space to simply breathe.
Glamorous Gallivant’s Final Thoughts
My Sri Lankan adventure began not with frantic sightseeing, but with stillness, clarity, and one very glamorous flight. Taking the seaplane to Kandy felt like stepping into a travel fantasy. Santani provided the detox my body didn’t know it needed.
I left refreshed and glowing. I was almost evangelical about kale. But don’t worry, I still celebrated my return with an extra large gin & tonic.
So, if you’re dreaming of Sri Lanka, take it from me: fly high. Escape to the mountains. Let Santani work its magic. Detoxing has never felt so glamorous.
