Medellín: A City of Reinvention

Why This Once-Notorious City Is Now One of South America’s Smartest Travel Choices

Is Medellín is one of the best cities in South America to visit? It’s certainly one of South America’s most surprising destinations. This is especially true for travellers over 50 who value culture, comfort, and meaningful experiences over ticking boxes.

Medellín was once infamous. However, it has now transformed into a confident and creative city. The city is known for innovation and warm hospitality. It also boasts one of the best climates in the world.

Why Medellín will Surprise the Most Seasoned Traveller

Upon driving into Medellín, it’s fair to say I felt somewhat anxious. I’m sure I’m not the first visitor to enter this city in recent months with an outdated mental picture. My perspective was, wrongly, shaped by headlines from decades ago.

The notorious Escobar brothers

However, what I actually found was a city that exuded warmth, creativity and surprisingly easy to love. I was totally caught off guard.

Medellín Shatters Expectations

Medellín didn’t just “clean up its image”, it rebuilt itself. Public transport, cable cars, libraries, parks, and community projects are woven into daily life. You can see the investment in people and neighbourhoods, not just tourist areas.

That level of civic pride is unexpected and deeply impressive. What was especially striking was the locals pride over their new city. They had lost so many years to crime and brutality. Now, they were all intent on showcasing Medellín in this positive new light. They have successfully created a contender for one of the best cities to visit in South America.

It’s Much Calmer Than People Expect

Visitors often brace themselves for chaos. Instead, they find an organised city with clean metro stations, polite commuters, and a relaxed rhythm. Please don’t hang on to outdated conceptions about Medellín and indeed Colombia. There is so much to see and experience in this part of South America.

Medellín’s transformation wasn’t the work of one single person. It was the result of bold political leadership, community action, and long-term urban planning. Medellín is now often studied globally as a model for urban regeneration.

The Climate Is Almost Too Perfect in one of South America’s Best Cities to Visit

Year-round spring weather changes everything. No battling humidity, no extreme heat, no heavy cold. Days are comfortable, evenings are gentle, and exploring never feels arduous.

People don’t expect a Colombian city to feel this! This is just another pleasant surprise waiting for you in one of South America’s smartest cities. One of the best cities to visit now in South America.

The People Are Genuinely Warm

Colombians are famously friendly, but Medellín seems to exude a special warmth. Locals are patient, curious, and as mentioned, very proud of their city. They’re happy to share it with the growing number of tourists and recount their many individual stories.

I was completely struck by the ‘Paisas‘ (people from Medellín) optimism for the future. Whilst they do not hide their past, they refuse to be defined by it. They are full of pride and excitement about the new Medellín, and so they should be.

From Comuna 13’s murals to galleries and sculpture-filled plazas, Medellín uses art to process its past rather than hide it.

Comuna 13 is a Must-See Experience

For culturally curious travellers, Comuna 13 is one of Medellín’s most compelling experiences. Once one of the city’s most dangerous neighbourhoods, it is now a powerful symbol of urban renewal.

Guided walking tours take you through colourful murals, outdoor escalators, and community spaces, offering insight into Colombia’s past and present. It’s moving, educational, and deeply human. I found it both captivating and emotional but not sensationalised. It’s an absolute must for visitors who wish to learn about this incredible city’s past.

Top Sights & Cultural Spots

  •  Plaza Botero – One of Medellín’s most iconic public spaces filled with oversized bronze sculptures by famed artist Fernando Botero. Botero is a contemporary artist, and is the most famous artist in Colombia, possibly all of Latin America currently. His style is very distinctive, called “boterismo”, with large, exaggeratedly fat subjects. It’s a great plaza for photos and people-watching.

  • Museum of Antioquia – Next to Plaza Botero, this museum houses important Colombian art (including Botero paintings) and historical exhibits.
  • Palacio Rafael Uribe Uribe – This unique building has a checked exterior inspired by Gothic Revival architecture. Created in the early 1900’s, it is now home to the Departmental Government of Antioquia. There are some art galleries inside. Be sure to go up to the rooftop for a great view over the plaza.

  • Plaza de las Luces or Plaza Cisneros – Famous for its ‘forest’ of around 300 tall light columns. Each column lights up at night creating an interesting glowing atmosphere. It’s a very popular photography spot. Go early evening to see the lights but be aware of your surroundings. Use a taxi as this area is still a bit rough around the edges, especially at night.

Parks and Nature

  • Parque Arví – Huge ecological nature park on Medellín’s eastern slopes. You can also hike, go on nature trails, and cycle here. There’s an outdoor market and as an added bonus, you can reach it by a wonderful scenic metro cable. The cable car journey itself is worth the visit.

  • Cerro El Picacho Viewpoint – Go here for great panoramic views of Medellín, perfect at sunrise or sunset.
  • Jardín Botánico de Medellín – One of the best free things to do in the city. It’s a really nice contrast to the busy urban areas. It provides a huge green space, thousands of plant species including an orchid collection (Colombia is famous for them!). You’ll also find the iconic Orquideorama here. This is a massive wooden canopy structure that looks like giant flowers.

Historic & Local Neighbourhoods

Comuna 13 – As mentioned above, its famous for its remarkable street art and murals. The escalators are used in urban renewal tours. This gives a vibrant insight into Medellín’s transformation.

San Antonio Park & Parque Berrío – Central plazas to explore downtown life and local culture.

Basilica Nuestra Señora de la Candeleria – This beautiful colonial church is right in the heart of Candelaria. It’s jut opposite Parque Berrio. This area is bustling with vendors and people outside the church. Inside, however, the experience becomes more serene.

Catedral Basilica Metropolitana de Medellin – This cathedral is the largest in the city. Many believe it is the largest brick cathedral in the world. It required more than a million adobe bricks. The facade is impressive, especially when the fountain in front is running. Stay south of the cathedral. This is where all the tourist sites are. Avoid the more dubious neighbourhoods in other directions.

El Poblado – A trendy, upscale district, popular with tourists and expats. It has boutique shops, modern cafes, nightlife, and leafy streets.

La Candelaria / Centro – Historic downtown, administrative and commercial hub. The core of Medellín since the colonial period with architecture showcasing Spanish influence.

Day trip to Guatapé & El Peñol – A classic and ‘must do’ excursion from Medellín. Guatapé is one of the most colourful little pueblos in Colombia. Nearby is La Piedra del Peñol, a giant monolith. You can climb it to get breathtaking views of the reservoir of Guatapé, its inlets, and craggies. This was certainly a highlight of our stay in Medellín.

Pueblito Paisa – one of the most iconic spots in Medellín. It’s a replica of a traditional Antioquian village. It sits on top of Cerro Nutibara, right in the middle of the city. If you’re looking for some exercise, you can walk to the top or alternatively just jump in a taxi.

Take a trip to one of Medellín’s best viewpoints. Whether its for panoramic cityscapes, sunrise photos or beautiful sunsets. These spots are fun to visit:

  • Cerro El Picacho Viewpoint

Coffee Culture Done Properly

Colombia produces some of the world’s best coffee. If you have decided to visit Colombia, then no trip would be complete without visiting the coffee region. It’s an easy escape from city life. It offers fresh mountain air and authentic Colombian culture. All of this is within a few hours of Medellín.

The areas to head to are:

  • Jardín – A beautifully preserved colonial town in Antioquia with flower-filled balconies and traditional cafés.
  • Salento – Gateway to coffee farms and the Cocora Valley.
  • Manizales – Known for its mountain setting and coffee heritage.

Visitors are able to tour working coffee farms to see the bean-to-cup process. You can learn about traditional harvesting and roasting methods and, of course, taste freshly brewed Colombian coffee at source.

If you’re stuck for time and don’t feel like venturing out to the coffee region, then do not worry. Medellín has a wonderful café scene. Neighbourhoods like El Poblado and Laureles are filled with excellent cafés and comfortable seating. The baristas are knowledgeable and happy to talk about beans, regions, and brewing methods.

Dining, Wine and Easy Evenings in One of the Best Cities in South America

Medellín’s food scene has matured alongside the city itself. Expect modern Colombian cuisine, excellent international restaurants, and rooftop bars .

Traditional Bandeja paisa

You can try traditional dishes like bandeja paisa, originally a farmer’s meal, designed to keep you full all day. Its a hearty platter of steak, chorizo, pork belly, rice beans, avocado and more. Its not a light lunch option but it is considered a must-try dish. You’ll find it everywhere from traditional fondas to modern restaurants.

For more casual eating, visit Mercado del Río for diverse cuisine. A popular place bringing together many different restaurants under one roof.

If you love dancing, take a salsa or bachata class in local bars. Explore one of the many lively nightlife districts like El Poblado and Laureles.

Evenings in Medellín can be lively or low-key based on your preference. You can enjoy early dinners with valley views. Alternatively, immerse yourself in live music and gentle salsa rhythms. It’s a city that understands enjoyment but doesn’t have to mean excess.

For 50+ travellers, neighbourhood choice matters. Once again these 2 areas are my recommendations:

  • Laureles / Estadio: Great for a quieter, more local residential vibe with good restaurant options nearby.
